TRAINING
Training is the basis of good performance. The MAA
recommends as much professional training and ongoing continuing education as possible,
from a variety of sources. The MAA provides a number of great courses as a benefit to
both our members, and those individuals outside the membership who wish to upgrade their
knowledge base and skill level. For information about the courses we offer, visit our Calendar of Events, which
contain links to Course Descriptions,
and the Course Registration Application. You should also take a
look at the information regarding the MAAs Certification and CEUs that we offer if
you are considering any of the training or certification courses; and, if you are already
a MAA-certified professional, the section concerning Recertification
and Renewal along with the Certification Renewal Application.
It is important that the membership remember that each individual is responsible for
submitting to the MAAs offices their required CEUs annually in order to maintain
membership. You will find on this site the forms for submitting Annual Continuing Education Verification, and
the Request for Public
Speaking Engagement.
Members should call our offices for any questions they may have concerning speaking
engagements and the requirements. All training courses offered by the MAA are open to
individuals from any other state as National Mold Assessment Association courses until
their State Chapters have been founded; their course certifications will be passed to the
individual State Chapter for renewals or recertification information at the time the
individuals certification renewal is due.
MEMBER DISCIPLINES
Certified Mold Inspector (CMI)
This professional performs basic mold inspections on
residential and commercial properties, consisting of a visual inspection of all accessible
areas and submitting a comprehensive report of findings during that inspection to the
client, and may suggest, in writing, any further need for follow-up research.
Certified Mold
Investigator (CMIV)
This professional performs those functions of the CMI,
but added to this specialists functions are those of environmental sampling and
testing, hands-on investigation services, including submitting test samples to a
laboratory, basic analysis of laboratory reports, writing and submitting a written report
to the client, which may include a suggestion for a Certified Mold Hygienist, clearance
sampling and testing, and writing/providing clearance or denial letters.
Certified Mold
Remediator (CMR)
These professionals perform mold remediation services.
Remediation services are the REMOVAL of hazardous materials, in this case, hazardous or
toxic molds. The CMR is certified for hazardous materials handling (HAZMAT) and is
licensed for pesticide application as it applies to biocides and fungicides. The CMR is
not, however, an individual certified for restoration services, who are credentialed
through other agencies.
Certified Mold
Hygienist (CMH)
This professional is skilled in all of the above
functions, adding to it a broad range of environmental knowledge and skills. The CMH
trains clients in mold awareness and prevention. The CMH must also have advanced skills in
writing remediation and clearance testing protocols and ensuring that those protocols are
followed, as well as ensuring proper amounts and types of testing are performed. The CMH
has a very high level of knowledge and experience with structures.
Masters
Certificates
MAA offers this designation to those professionals who
have demonstrated a high quality of excellence within their past and combined designation
fields. MAA offers seven of these highly specialized category designations for those who
desire to achieve their Masters certification:
Visual Control
Inspector (VCI)
The VCI provides a higher level of visual
mold inspection services, and sometimes functions in a supervisory capacity when more than
one CMI is necessary for larger structures. The individual must first have achieved the
CMI designation through the MAA and have worked within this discipline at least 6 months
before applying for and being accepted into the VCI course, which is pass-fail with no
errors accepted.
Control Assessment
Investigator (CAI)
The CAI provides a higher
level of mold assessment and investigation services whose function uses more techniques
and methods to pinpoint less obvious areas of possible contamination, and sometimes
functions in a supervisory capacity when more than one CMIV is necessary for larger
structures. The individual must first have achieved the CMIV designation through the MAA
and have worked within this discipline at least 6 months before applying for and being
accepted into the CAI course, which is pass-fail with no errors accepted.
Control and Clearance
Testing Investigator (CCTI)
The CCTI provides a higher
level of mold investigation services whose function uses more advanced control strategies
during a mold clearance test investigation, and sometimes functions in a supervisory
capacity when more than one CMIV is necessary for larger structures. The individual must
first have achieved the CMIV designation through the MAA and have worked within this
discipline at least 1 year before applying for and being accepted into the CCTI course,
which is pass-fail with no errors accepted.
Defect Correction
Contractor (DCC)
The DCC provides a higher
level of mold remediation services whose function uses more advanced removal techniques
for specialty structures or in cases where extreme care is required and includes
preparation for repair and restorative services to follow. This specialist sometimes
functions in a supervisory capacity when more than one CMR is necessary for larger
structures. The individual must first have achieved the CMR designation through the MAA
and have worked within this discipline at least 9 months before applying for and being
accepted into the DCC course, which is pass-fail with no errors accepted.
Residential Hygienist (RH)
The RH provides mold
hygiene services specifically designed for residential structures. This specialist has
completed specialized training on indoor environments with respect to common residential
elements and is highly trained in client teaching. This individual may also function in a
supervisory capacity to other mold professionals or act as consultant for a CMH. The
individual must have first reached the CMH designation through the MAA and have worked
within this discipline at least 6 months before applying for and being accepted into the
RH course, which is pass-fail with no errors accepted.
Commercial Hygienist (CH)
The CH provides mold
hygiene services specifically designed for commercial structures. This specialist has
completed specialized training on indoor environments with respect to common commercial
elements and is highly trained in employer/employee teaching. This individual may also
function in a supervisory capacity to other mold professionals or as a consultant to a
CMH. The individual must have first reached the CMH designation through the MAA and have
worked within this discipline at least 1 year before applying for and being accepted into
the CH course, which is pass-fail with no errors accepted.
Environmental Hygienist
(EH)
The EH provides mold
hygiene services specifically designed for indoor environments of all types and has
received specialized training in how outdoor environments affect and relate to indoor
environments, and is highly trained in teaching/training. This individual may also
function in a supervisory capacity to other mold professionals, and a consulting capacity
for CMHs. The individual must have first reached the CMH designation through the MAA, as
well as taken either the RH or CH Master certificate training, and must have worked within
this discipline for at least 18 months before applying for and being accepted into the EH
course, which is pass-fail with no errors accepted.
Master Certified Mold
Specialist (MCMS)
MAA offers this designation
to those professionals who have clearly demonstrated all of the above functions for at
least one year, and have first reached the EH master certificate designation through the
MAA before applying for and being accepted into the MCMS course. These specialists must
also have managed two or more persons within the mold industry for a minimum of two years;
must demonstrate clear knowledge of the "whole structure" concept, and must be
trained in at least one biological science. A thesis presentation is required, and the
course is pass-fail with no errors accepted. This individual has highly specialized
knowledge of the industry in broad scope, regulatory guidelines, and prevention planning.
This individual sometimes functions in a supervisory capacity or as a consultant for other
mold professionals, as well as may be called upon to function as an investigative officer.

CERTIFICATIONS
& CEUs
Education, education,
education
this is one of the fundamental purposes and the cornerstone of the South
Carolina Mold Assessment Association, to enhance the quality of the members. Whether you
receive your education through one of a variety of events we sponsor throughout the year,
such as conferences, training courses, Chapter meetings, technology exchanges, the
National Convention or through certification courses of other various associations and
societies, or otherwise, it is important to keep up with your professionalism. The MAA
recommends education from a variety of sources. Upgrading the professional knowledge of
our members strengthens the profession across the board. The technical information
prepared by our instructors and authors is comprehensive, current and applicable to
todays challenges. It is required, as well, that members who are certified through
our programs, certify within each of their individual state Chapters, as each State has
differing geography and flora, climate and soil conditions, and regulatory requirements.
It is also required that our members maintain a minimum of 8 CEUs annually to maintain
their certifications, so that it is assured they have furthered their knowledge and
maintained awareness of technological, regulatory and standards changes within the
industry. Make today the day to raise your level of mold assessment professionalism!
The MAAs Certification Program
offers current and evolving information in six stages, culminating in an offering for
Masters Certification, and its testing is set up similar to the Universitys
testing program. Mold professionals in the State of South Carolina who are applying
chemical biocides and fungicides for the treatment of mold will need to take the State
Certified exam for pesticide application until a new Category is delineated for mold
professionals. The MAA offers preparation courses to mold professionals for these
examinations.
The MAAs Certification Program
examinations are designed to test the individuals knowledge of the identification,
investigation, hygiene and removal of microbiological contaminants in structures, their
knowledge of regulatory requirements, technological advances within the industry, the
science behind the issues, the health aspects concerned, and the administrative elements
necessary for documentation. Each level of certification is specifically designed to
emphasize a specialty within the profession, and ensures quality performance through the
requirements of time-based experience, on-going continuing education, and recertification.
All of the questions included within the
written examinations are based upon information provided within industry standards and
guidelines, and nationally accepted texts. The practical examinations, which are hands-on
demonstrations at active sites, are pertinent to applying the written material to actual
performance. All field demonstration examinations must be passed without error. Masters
Certification courses, both the field and written examinations, must all be passed without
error. Final Masters examination requires an additional thesis presentation.
Certification is based on (1) successful
completion of the required course(s), (2) passing a comprehensive written examination(s),
(3) passing a practical hands-on demonstration (field) examination(s) at an active site,
and (4) completion of an approved thesis for Masters Certification. Upon successful
completion of the requirements, candidates will be certified by the Board of Directors of
the MAA that they have knowledge and ability in mold assessment, as taught by the South
Carolina Mold Assessment Association.
Our intensive courses focus on the
application of knowledge to problems faced. Because the course material cannot be
reasonably absorbed in a short time, most students return to their work after their
courses equipped with a broad appreciation of the issues, along with theoretical and
practical tools necessary to begin their development as a mold professional. Proficiency
in the methods comes only with their continued practice. After several months to a year of
practical application after a certification program, most students return for a secondary
certification program, and ultimately for their Masters Certification, where the
principles and techniques of the initial programs are expanded upon. The intervening
practical application experience provides an essential base for the subsequent courses and
students are now in a position to acquire greater understanding and to refine their
technique within the context of their practical work. Subsequent courses provide
uninterrupted time for intensive study in a specialized area and increasingly more
sophisticated and focused instruction from course instructors.
The MAA has established strict protocols
for reviewing and approving all courses for the certification program. A course reviewer
attends each class under consideration for approval. The reviewer completes a
comprehensive course evaluation form, and may or may not make suggestions for any
improvements or modifications that are necessary in order for the course to meet the
appropriate criteria. Upon any such changes, and after another review of the modified
course, a recommendation is made to the MAA Board of Directors to approve the respective
course.
Any owner, manager, or employee of a
company, or others in the private sectors who have an interest in the mold assessment
profession may take an MAA certification course or exam; however, it is strongly
recommended that the individual have a background in a trade or profession conducive to
mold assessment. An individual who passes certification course examinations shall be
designated as "Certified." Certification is for the individual only. Our
programs are not designed to provide an overall certification to a company. Those who pass
the examinations are provided with a certificate signed by the Chair of the Board of
Directors and a certification I.D. card with their level(s) of expertise(s) listed.
Applicants must complete a Course Registration Application
and pay the associated tuition fee. Tuition fees are all-inclusive and the following is
provided for each course: cost of the course, exam(s), workbook(s), text manual(s),
application fee, I.D. card and certificate costs, and shipping and handling costs.
The MAA has negotiated for lower hotel rates for students who stay at the location of
the course, and the information is provided in their course packages.
Please remember to allow enough time to
receive your materials for study and to make travel arrangements for attending the course.
Payment and registration for courses must be received at the MAA offices a minimum
of 20 business days prior to the date of the course via cashiers check, personal
check, money order, or by credit card (Mastercard, Visa, Discover, American Express).
There are no refunds.
Also, you will be expected to read the
materials and fill in the workbook prior to the first class. Tool kits are provided during
the class for a small fee, which will be listed in your course information package. You
will need to purchase the tool kits in order to complete the field examination portion of
the course.
If a candidate fails the certification
examination(s) upon first attempt, the individual may take the exam again at a duly
scheduled date at no additional cost. If, however, the individual fails the exam on the
second attempt, he/she must repeat the course, at a duly scheduled course date at
additional cost, before taking the examination(s) again.
Upon passing the examination, an individual
shall be designated as certified within their respective fields; the individual is
responsible for submitting information to the MAAs offices per the required 8 CEUs
annually to retain their certifications. If certification is lost or nullified, for any
reason, to become recertified an individual must apply for recertification and take the
course(s) and examination(s) again.
Examinations
MAA administers a written examination that will consist of
multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, True-False and written answer questions. The time
provided to complete the exam is three (3) hours. At the testing location you will receive
an exam booklet with a separate sheet on which to record answers. No notes may be taken
regarding examination questions or content. Persons violating this provision will be
denied certification. No breaks are scheduled during the exam. At the conclusion of the
exam you will be required to return the test booklet and answer sheet and will not be
permitted to remove a copy of the test booklet from the room.
Candidate scores for written exams are
based on the number of correct responses. Each question receives a credit if scored
correctly, and no credit if incorrect or omitted. Therefore, the candidate should answer
each question, even if he/she must guess. If a candidate marks more than one response for
a question, that question will be scored as incorrect. The passing score is 90% for all
written exams, with the exception of Masters Certification exams, which are pass-fail with
no errors accepted. Masters certification scores must be 100%.
After the written examination, the MAA
administers a practical examination, with a hands-on demonstration that takes place at an
active site. A candidate must be able to apply what he/she has learned to a real-world
situation. A written report of findings will be submitted as part of the test. These
examinations are pass-fail. Score must be 100% to pass and the field examination
must be passed to obtain certification.
For Masters Certified Mold Specialist
(MCMS) certification, an additional thesis presentation is required. All requirements for
thesis preparation and presentation are provided to the candidate at the time of the
written exam. Each candidate is responsible for making an appointment with the Board of
Directors for presentation of his/her thesis. Decisions of the Board of Directors are
final.
Within approximately 2-4 weeks of taking
any examination, you will receive a "score report" by mail. The report will
indicate the number of test questions answered correctly and the number answered
incorrectly. The report will indicate performance on the field test, noting areas for
improvement, including any documentation standards. If you passed your examination(s) your
score report will be followed by a certificate and I.D. certification card from the MAA.
Individuals who take the exam will not be
provided with a copy of the exam before or after the actual test administration. Some
questions on the exam may be re-used on a future exam, and therefore copies of the exam
cannot be released for security reasons.
The MAA uses a formal procedure to allow
and encourage all candidates to challenge the content of specific test questions or the
overall test. Under this procedure, candidates receive a special critique form during the
test that they may complete anonymously, noting possibly vague or ambiguous aspects of
questions, or other test quality issues. These forms should be completed during the
administration of the test, but after the candidate has completed all examination
questions. The critiques are used post-administration for quality control review of the
test.
Substantial effort is made to ensure that
test questions are written in a clear, direct and straightforward manner. Candidates with
sufficient knowledge of mold assessment and related codes and standards are likely to
score well and pass the test; candidates with insufficient knowledge are unlikely to
attain a passing score. The MAA recommends the following strategies to maximize your
performance on the exam:
|
 |
Read and
know the material before you come to class, this way you will be prepared for
questions. |
 |
Be certain
to read and study the glossary on the MAA web site, as well as all other
material found within the sites pages. |
 |
Have your
workbook completed before coming to class. The workbook is a tool designed to
assist you in forming questions you will need to ask during class. |
 |
Ask as many
questions as possible during class instruction. Continue to ask questions until you are
satisfied that you understand a concept or principle. |
 |
Make certain you
understand the "why" as well has the "how," because understanding why
helps to remember how to get it done. |
 |
Make notes only
for those concepts and principles that you do not already know or understand easily.
Listening comprehension skills are important to the success of passing examinations. |
 |
Make sure to
study your notes the evening before the examination. Go through any processes or
methods in your minds eye in order to "see" the necessary steps to be
taken. |
 |
The test is timed
and adherence to the time limits is strictly enforced; therefore, you should not spend an
excessive amount of time on any one question. Instead, skip such questions temporarily so
that easier questions can be answered. Return to the more difficult questions after
completing all other questions. |
 |
Approach the
entire examination process as if you are answering questions for or providing services to
a client, or as if a regulatory agent is investigating your work.
|
Candidates are not
permitted to bring food or beverages into the test room, nor is smoking permitted in the
test room at any time, and candidates may not exit the room for "smoking breaks"
in the middle of the exam. Collaboration and other disruptive conduct are prohibited. Any
violation of this regulation shall result in a score of zero for the test. No smoking,
food or beverages are allowed at any onsite field examination, and candidates may not exit
the site in the middle of the examination. Collaboration and other disruptive conduct
during the field exams are prohibited. Any violation of this regulation shall result in a
score of zero for the field examination.
The MAA reserves the right to cancel any
test score, if, in the Associations sole discretion, there is adequate reason to
challenge its validity. The MAA also reserves the right to delete from scoring any
question that is determined to have been exposed before the test administration, or is
determined to be flawed. Similarly, MAA reserves the right to cancel a test
administration if it has been determined that the security of the test was violated prior
to its administration.
Certification Renewal and Recertification
MAA-certified professionals must renew their certifications
annually. It is a certification requirement to maintain updated information and knowledge
about the industry through acquiring 8 CEUs annually. Certified professionals must submit
their evidence of CEUs to the MAA offices using the Certification
Renewal Application and the Annual Continuing Education Verification forms,
forwarding to the MAAs offices along with the appropriate renewal fee. Renewal
reminders are sent to certified professionals 60 days prior to lapse date. The renewals
are governed by the issue date of the highest level of certification achieved.
MAA-certified professionals must apply
for recertification if they allow their original certifications to lapse.
Recertification requires repeating the necessary courses to obtain certification along
with the associated fees. Upon recertification a member will receive a new certification
I.D. number. Recertification requests are submitted to the MAAs office using the Certification Renewal Application and the Course Application forms.
Continuing Education Units
The MAA offers a variety of seminars, courses, educational
programs and speaking engagements for obtaining Association-based CEUs. CEUs and
Continuing Credit Hours (CCHs) from other sources are also accepted by the MAA (as long
as verified) for the certified professional to achieve the required number of credits to
maintain either membership or certification. It is the responsibility of the member and/or
the certified professional to submit the required form(s) to the MAAs offices.
Members need only submit the Annual
Continuing Education Verification form to meet their requirements.
COURSE
DESCRIPTIONS
